Google Maps fights the opioid epidemic

Google’s team, in conjunction with the DEA, has a built a locator tool, using the Google Maps API, to help locate places where one may dispose of their leftover medications.

This was built ahead of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 28, 2018. The event intended to help fight the abuse of drugs in the US was created in 2005 and used to be on October 22nd until 2017 where it moved to April 28.

Google’s locator tool is a nice collection of mostly local Police Stations and a few Fire Stations across the country. Google say they will work with the DEA and some state governments to gather data on year-round take back options for future Google Maps integration.

Looking for “prescription drugs disposal” on Google Maps tends to list local drug stores in your area which may not be accepting drugs for disposal.
